How to Clean a Tempur-Pedic Mattress

First things first: Tempur-Pedic mattresses aren’t supposed to get wet. If you already own a Tempur-Pedic mattress, this is one of the first things you probably saw in the cleaning/care instructions it came with. Of course, this makes spot-cleaning a Tempur-Pedic a lot harder than spot-cleaning an innerspring mattress; also, because the Tempur foam can’t get wet, it also means that success isn’t guaranteed when it comes to cleaning a spill or stain. With all of that said, there are steps you can take that may be able to help minimize spot damage.

1. Remove sheets and covers. If the spill or stain has affected the sheets, pretreat the sheets with a laundry stain remover.
2. Soak up the spill. Use dry towels and press down on the spill to soak up moisture.
3. Let the remaining moisture air dry. Do not place sheets and covers over the mattress until the moisture is completely gone.

Note: If simply blotting the spill with dry towels isn’t enough, you can try blotting it with a solution of 1-2 drops diluted gentle laundry detergent. Use the solution at your discretion, since the Tempur-Pedic foam isn’t designed for direct cleaning in this manner and the solution can damage the foam cells. Always carefully read the care instructions that come with your mattress before cleaning.

Cleaning for Dust

Tempur foam is dense, so dust accumulating inside a mattress is almost impossible. It is possible, however, for dust to settle on the surface. If a dusty mattress is becoming a problem, try a light vacuum cleaner to lift up set-in particles. You may find it helpful to pat the mattress first using your hands to first break up the dust and then using a handheld or portable vacuum cleaner.

Drying a Tempur-Pedic Mattress

Since a Tempur-Pedic mattress is not supposed to get wet, when spills do happen, it’s essential that you get to drying them as soon as possible. Blot the spill with dry paper towels or cloth towels and use a vacuum to lift up the excess moisture. For deep spills, the Tempur-Pedic care guide also recommends placing an electrical fan near the spill to speed up drying. Finally, do not place sheets on just yet – let the mattress air dry for as long as possible to ensure lingering droplets don’t get trapped. If it's a sunny day, we recommend opening any windows in the room so that the mattress gets a chance to breathe.
