Choosing a Queen Bed
A Queen bed in a bedroom furniture set contains a few different elements that come together to create unique style for your bedroom. Here are each of the elements to pay attention to when browsing these beds:
- Headboard. The largest and perhaps most important element of a Queen bed, when it comes to style, is the headboard. This is the first element that pops out at you when you walk into the bedroom – it is positioned against a wall at around eye level, so it’s hard not to notice. Use the headboard’s visual “loudness” to your advantage by choosing one that speaks to your style. Wood, fabric, dark or light colors can all impact the way your room feels (and, residually, how you feel upon waking up every morning and falling asleep every evening.)
- Footboard. The footboard is the headboard’s opposite by position. Located at the base of the bed, it provides visual balance – and a more polished look as opposed to a bed without a footboard. If you are putting a Queen bed together by bringing together the parts from different places (as opposed to buying it all from the same manufacturer), keep in mind that matching the headboard and footboard is the way to go; keeping both in the same color and material will create a seamless bedroom aesthetic that feels clean and put together.
- Side rails. The side rails of a Queen bed are slim boards or panels that are designed to define the perimeter of the bed. While not necessary for sleeping, these parts, when paired with a matching headboard and footboard, create a uniform bed look.
- Upholstery. While some beds are made of solid wood, most are upholstered; the upholstery options for Queen designs are many! Choosing an upholstery type is the fun part, as this is where your style can truly shine. From fun patterns such as animal print, animalia, forest motifs and abstracts (all great for infusing a splash of energy) to material components such as tufting, bunching and button closures, the look and feel of your bed comes down to upholstery details.
- Platform. A platform is the base of the bed, where the mattress goes. Queen beds usually are half-and-half when it comes to platform types: about half comes with a platform that is solidly built and does not require a box spring, while the other half features a more spaced-out design and does require a box spring. If you are unsure which type your Queen bed is, ask the manufacturer or salesperson, as placing a mattress directly on platform that does require a box spring, without a box spring , can void the warranty, make for an uncomfortable (and dangerous) sleep and lead to faster wear and tear of your bed.
- Underbed storage space. The space under a Queen bed varies. Just because all Queen beds have the same length and width dimensions does not mean they have the same heights. If you are looking for a bed that allows you to place storage containers underneath it, pay attention to the height dimensions and particularly the space under the bed. Note, too, that just because a bed’s dimensions show that the space under the bed is limited or non-existent (meaning, the sides of the bed touch or almost touch the floor), does not mean that storage is ruled out: many designs come with drawers built into the side rails.
- Height. How high the bed is can have a dramatic effect on the bedroom. Higher draws the eye upward – while lower creates a simpler look. Both have their pros and cons (higher beds can make a room feel taller and bigger, while lower beds are easier to climb into and can make a room feel more minimalist). Think about how you feel climbing into and out of bed and whether a lower bed is necessary for you or your partner physically as you peruse height options.
