DIY: How to Reupholster Your Chairs
If you're planning to reupholster your chairs on your own and you haven't done it before, you'll want to gather a few important materials before you get started. This includes:
-
Your fabric of choice
-
A sewing machine
-
A staple gun
-
Scissors
-
A marking pen
-
A flathead screwdriver
-
Needlenose pliers
Before you embark on your reupholstery journey, you may also want to consider spending some time watching online tutorials. The process you'll need to follow to reupholster your dining chairs includes:
-
Removing the old fabric from your chair — you'll likely need to disassemble the chair at this stage.
-
Determine if you need to replace batting springs or webbing on the chair and if necessary or desired, sand and paint the chair frame.
-
Cut your new fabric to the correct size by laying it over the chair and cutting it an extra two to three inches on either side.
-
Attach the fabric to the base of your chair, making sure to pull it tight, and staple it to the bottom of the seat.
-
Create and sew the welting to go along the edge of the seat.
-
Staple the fabric to the sides of the chair, making sure to attach the staples below the welting.
-
Follow the same steps to attach the fabric to the back of the chair.
-
Staple black or another dark, breathable fabric of choice to the bottom of the chair to conceal your webbing and springs.
